Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the ICBC knowledge test and about using this free practice site.

How many questions are on the ICBC knowledge test?
The ICBC knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 40 correctly — a score of 80% — to pass. This applies to both the car and the motorcycle knowledge tests.
How much does the ICBC knowledge test cost?
The knowledge test costs $15 in British Columbia. It is free for people aged 65 and older. You pay at the ICBC driver licensing office.
What does the ICBC knowledge test cover?
The car test covers road signs, traffic signals, rules of the road, right-of-way, speed and space management, and safe driving practices. The motorcycle test adds rider-specific topics such as protective gear, motorcycle controls, cornering, and lane positioning.
How do I book the ICBC knowledge test?
You can book online through icbc.com or visit a driver licensing office in person. Many offices accept walk-ins for the knowledge test. See our guide on booking your ICBC knowledge test for the full process.
What should I bring to the test?
Bring acceptable identification that proves your name, date of birth, and signature, and a way to pay the fee. You will also complete a vision screening at the office.
What happens if I fail the knowledge test?
You can rebook and try again. A waiting period and another fee may apply. Practising until you score consistently above 80% is the best way to avoid a retake.
Is this practice test the same as the real ICBC test?
No. BC Knowledge Test is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with ICBC. Our questions are original and written to cover the same material as the official ICBC manuals, in the same 50-question, 80%-to-pass format.
Is this practice test free?
Yes. Every practice test, the road-signs quiz, the guides, and the progress dashboard are completely free. There is no account to create and nothing to pay.
How many practice questions are there?
The car question bank has 165 questions and the motorcycle bank has 110. Each 50-question attempt is drawn from the bank, so repeat attempts feel fresh.
Do you store my personal information?
No. There are no accounts. Your scores and progress are saved only in your own browser, on your own device. See our privacy policy for details.
Which manuals are the questions based on?
Car questions are based on the ICBC “Learn to Drive Smart” manual and motorcycle questions on “Learn to Ride Smart”. We review the questions against the current editions and show a last-reviewed date.
What score should I aim for before booking the real test?
Aim to score 90% or higher across several practice attempts, including at least one timed exam simulation. Consistent results matter more than a single good score.
